I need help!!! I AM NEW TO DNN... I am new to website designing and editing.  I come from a design background and have recently started a career change in IT.  I am currently doing an internship at an IT company.  They have asked me to edit their existing web site as i have design skills and some basic understanding of HTML... and i mean really basic.

When i log into their website as an admin, i notice the web page goes into editing mode. With modules at the top centre, page functions on the left and common tasks on the right.

The problem i am having is resizing the logo which is at the top left and changing the size of the background image which is at the top right.  I thought you could simply click the logo and rechange the size but i can not select it.  Also adding to this the logo appears to be an animated gif which i have no clue about.

I am so stuck, i spent like 3 hours researching the web to find solutions, i know i am doing this all wrong, can someone please help me!

I think it is DotNetNuke that i am using because when i clicked on the help icon it took me straight to their website.  I tried finding tutorials but all the websites i go to are saying i should subscribe but i don't want to do this.  Isn't there tutorials show me how to update logos and background images.

I understand sort of how to edit the left panel, centre panel and right panel, user friendly, but it is just the logo i need to make smaller and also it is a animated gif so even more complicated.

When i right click the logo and go to properties this is what i get: /Portals/_default/Skins/TSS/logo.gif

So i know the logo is called logo.gif but i can't locate the default folder because it seems to be hidden.

I just need some steps to head in the right direction, i am so worried because when i go in tomorrow this will be my job for the morning :(

If anyone can help me i would appreciate it so much.

Many thanks,

Steve

You are best optimizing and resizing your logo in a package such as Photoshop and reuploading the logo (use "save for web" if it's photoshop). The same applies for all graphics. Although you can resize in text/html modules this is not very good practice.

Ideally use an original logo, otherwise right click and download the logo picture to alter (at least you will have a backup).

You can upload a new logo in Admin/Site settings

Hi Alex,

Thanks for your response. I understand that in order to resize logo i will need to use a bitmap application like photoshop. My problem is that when i right click the logo and go to properties the location of logo is : /Portals/_default/Skins/TSS/logo.gif

And i can't find the _default folder as it is hidden. :(   Also the logo is an animated gif.  Not to familiar about animated gifs. Any other advise would be appreciated.  The problem i think why i can't access all the settings when logged in as admin for eg: Admin/Site settings (i can not see skins, and all the other options that are usually under there, because i found out that DotNetNuke isn't even installed on machine.

Strange, because even though it's not installed i can still make basic changes to text, layout of panels ( how come i can do these changes when DotNetNuke isn't even installed. So confusing, and to add to this, when i tried installing DotNetNuke today, i was given instructions to use SQL application to create a database.... way over my head at this stage ( so i stopped at that stage)

To familarise myself with DotNetNuke i installed their demo site so i can mess about with the application and get used to it, rather that going straight to company site and totally messing that up.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers Alex, look forward to your response.

Thanks :)

Steve

To download the file:

VIA BROWSER

You can right click/save as (or save image as) the logo on your browser.

VIA DNN

Use Host/File manager (you might need to do a recursive sync first though, top right hand side of the file manager).

and you can also do this via a FTP application.

Then make your changes via Photoshop or whatever package (Manipulating animated GIF's you might prefer a particular package, please search google for further advice as it's not really DNN specific).

.... and then you upload the file via DNN or FTP.

Also I would suggest buying an introductory book, there are plenty of recommendations via these forums, although there is plenty of online documentation as well (check search engines).

Thanks and good luck...

DotNetNuke is only installed on the server, and editing takes place on the server, not your system.  As for animated GIF files, that's not a function of DNN, but you'll find plenty of information if you use Google.  If you have no experience in DNN, no experience in Databases and only some HTML experience, you may want to get with one of the other employees for a quick lesson.
