Trond, it will be ready when it is ready.

While this sounds lame, it actually isn't. RC2 was released on the first day of OpenForce, and is available to the public. Chances are that a number of new issues will be found ....

You yourself (and anyone else in the community) can speed up delivery of DNN5.0 by downloading and testing it, and giving us feedback....

predicting a number of new issues is sad ...  while at the same time announcing DotNetNuke Professional Edition?   http://www.dotnetnuke.com/News/MediaReleases/DotNetNukeProfessionalEdition/tabid/1184/Default.aspx

why the mix of topics?

1.  5.0 is 9 months past the planned release

2.  Simple usability issues still not addressed

3.  Cambrian - more of a 5 year plan than what was hyped

Still..  DNN is the only product I know of with "when it's ready" bs..  yet somehow magically they can now provide professional support?

One of the main barriers we have faced in delivering some of the large scale enhancements in the DNN 5.0 roadmap was a sustainable revenue model. Every major release of DNN in the past where significant functionality was introduced was implemented by dedicated development resources who were funded by third party organizations desiring the specific functionality. This model does not scale and we have been working hard over the past year to address this challenge. Based on the evidence in the open source software market, the input of our business advisors, and the demand from serious business users, we have announced the upcoming release of DotNetNuke Professional Edition in Q1 2009. Professional Edition will help us achive greater financial stability and accelerate the momentum of the project. Note that Professional Edition will be based on DNN 4.9 because it is the most production-proven platform at this point in time. However, it is highly likely however that DNN 5.0 will reach production quality and have a general release by the end of Q4 2008 ( before Professional Edition goes to market ). I hope this information has been helpful. We appreciate your patience and support.

I know this is against the overall philosophy, but I would pay a small fee for the right to use DotNetNuke.

This could have solved the revenue issue 2 years ago.   I'd pay and I'd like to think almost everyone would.  Even $20 would create a substantial revenue stream.

Again, I realize this is against the current philosophy.

I hope you do solve this revenue model issue as it benefits everyone.    I said it when the Sponsorships were originally announced that it wouldn't work and I don't believe the revenue from support subscriptions is going to solve the funding for development issue.
