I've been running a DNN site for several years on behalf of a sports club. The current parent site is on ver 3.5 so my first step is to run an upgrade and then I'd like to create my own portal so that i can host several sports clubs as children and turn the current parent in to a child of the new site. Hope that makes sense. Some pointers on the best approach to take with this (and I'm hoping it's fairly straightforward) would be appreciated.

The easiest way to accomplish this, is by adding HTTPAlis in the PortalAlias table of the DNN database. For example the child portal HTTPAlias will look something like this www.yourdomain.com/child_portal. You can add another record with the same PortalID value and new HTTPAlias that is FQDN.

In order for this to work, you will need to make sure that the new host name is resolving correctly to the IP of the web server and it's mapped in the host headers of the IIS site your DNN installation is running in.
