  <customErrors mode="Off"/>
  <!-- forms or Windows authentication -->
  <authentication mode="forms">
   <forms name=".DOTNETNUKE" protection="All" timeout="60" cookieless="UseCookies"/>
  </authentication>
  <!--
      <identity impersonate="true"/>
      <authentication mode="Windows">
      </authentication>
  -->

anyway when i come to access i still get this message(the same message i got when it was set to remote access)

please it is now driving me mad and cannot find anything in the forum

have pasted below the error

thanks

Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine.

Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a <customErrors> tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This <customErrors> tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "Off".

<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->

<configuration>
    <system.web>
        <customErrors mode="Off"/>
    </system.web>
</configuration>

Notes: The current error page you are seeing can be replaced by a custom error page by modifying the "defaultRedirect" attribute of the application's <customErrors> configuration tag to point to a custom error page URL.

<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->

<configuration>
    <system.web>
        <customErrors mode="RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="mycustompage.htm"/>
    </system.web>
</configuration>

Server Error in '/' Application.

make sure, there is no web.config file interfering from a parent directory.

If you turn custom errors to "Off", and still get that message it usually means one of these has occurred:

1. You have the wrong .NET version selected in IIS
2. Your web.config has a syntax error (brackets not closed etc).  Rename it to web.config.xml and open in IE, it must open with no errors.  Dont forget to rename it back again afterwards

There are also some rarer cases (like the one suggested above).  But try the 2 main problems first.

JK.

there was config in the root which i got to

renamed it and got a little futher

now come up with the following error

ine 87: <system.web>
Line 88:     <!-- Ensure validationkey is not set to AutoGenerate,IsolateApps so it correctly supports webfarms -->
Line 89: <machineKey
Line 90:   validationKey="AutoGenerate,IsolateApps"
Line 91:   decryptionKey="F9D1A2D3E1D3E2F7B3D9F90FF3965ABDAC304902F8D923AC"
