This is in response to an earlier thread with the same title that can be found here:

http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Forums/tabid/795/forumid/111/threadid/210701/scope/posts/threadpage/1/Default.aspx

I was scratching my head for sometime to get my SL2 xap to work with DNN. The SL app simple did not show up on a DNN page.

The above thread suggested using the <asp:Silverlight> control as the only way to use SL 2 with DNN. And when I did it, voila, my SL app was there.

However, the second-last post on that thread (when I last saw it!!!) mentioned that <asp:Silverlight> control works only with absolute sizing (in pixels), NOT with relative ones (in percentage). That stumped me again. I had devoted considerable efforts to make my SL respond to sizing.

And then I tried something (I still cant see why others haven't tried it). I used absolute sizing with the <object> tag containing my silverlight app. And voia again, the app was there fine. I have done it with .NET 3.5 (WITHOUT using <asp:Silverlight> control at all). Can anyone confirm this approach also works on .NET 2.0. It should. I just did not have the time to test.

And to DNN core team, can you figure out why the SL app in object tag works with absolute sizing, NOT with relative one, when relative sizing works fine on a normal HTML page.

I can't see how Silverlight 2 would work with .NET 2.0 as Silverlight is known also as WPF/E (or WPF everywhere).  In other words, it is a subset of WPF which was introduced in .NET 3.0.  Maybe I'm wrong, but I just don't think it is possible to run Silverlight on .NET 2.0.

When you launch a Silverlight app using the < object > tags you are not using asp.net on the server at all. This is why it works with asp.net 2.0. It will even work on a Linux server.

If you use the <ASP control tag this is obviously a asp.net 3.5 control so you can only use it on a server running asp.net 3.5.

As far as the sizing problems with the Object tag, does the sizing work outside of DNN?

I am not sure what you mean Michael. Outside DNN, the SL works just fine with relative sizing for me.

I think this should provide some clue:

However, the problem on the above thread has been reported only for FF 3. I am not sure why is it still NOT working with DNN. Michael, see if you can get some clue from Microsoft Silverlight team. This would be a relief for all DNN developers out there who like living on the cutting-edge of technology.

This thread is quite old. But I thought if someone was still interested just in case. I today tried for the first time to run SL 2 app with .NET 2.0, and succeeded without any hiccups. Just the plain old <object> tag worked.

I think I should also mention that my Hosting provider supported only .NET 2.0, and has not configured the web-server to report a MIME type of x-application/silverlight for the .xap extension.

Even that was NOT a hurdle. I simply renamed the .xap to .zip extension. No change was made to any code. Simply the zip was referneced instead of the xap in the object tag. And that is working wonderfully. Anyone intertested can have a look at:

There's another point. I have tried using relative sizes. The relative size on width works (the above example uses a relative size of 100% on the object's div tag), but relative sizing on height does not work. Height needs an absolute figure. And that was a relief for me, as controls are relatively sized normally in width, if height exceeds, Vertical scroll bars are not that a usability concern than horizontal scroll bars.
