Hi All

Web build is something entirely new to me and I suspect I have made a very obvious mistake (since decided to buy DNN for dummies - that's me!).

I downloaded default.css, portal.css, skin.css and menu.css.  I made a few easy changes (font size mostly) and then I removed the files from the directories through host > file manager and re-uploaded with my amended style sheets.  When I refreshed the page I seem to have lost the normal menu effect (appears transparent / white, text ok).  Hover and sub menu still appears ok.  I also seem to have lost other background.

I kept a copy of each original css file and deleted my amended ones again and re-uploaded with the originals but the problem persists.  I have tried reading up on this but I'm afraid this is all so very foreign to me.

I will study DNN for dummies carefully but for now I would very much like to enlist the advice of anyone who may be able to explain what corrective actions I need to install.

Many thanks and regards

Jon

If you have re-uploaded the originals but are still seeing a problem, your browser may be caching the files you changed and not downloading the originals you uploaded as their date/time would be older. Clearing your browser's cache should fix the problem.

Don't forget that if you are modifying skins directly (meaning that you are not uploading them from the skins menu), you will probably need to reparse them.  There is an option at the bottom of the skins menu that allows you to do that.

(Cross-posting my similar response from another thread here.)

Since you're just getting started with DNN, you might find it handy to NOT change your default skin files but, instead, try things out in a "safer" way by overriding a skin's CSS settings on a page-by-page or portal-by-portal basis:

PAGE-BY-PAGE:
Use a page's PAGE HEADER TAGS setting to override one or more skin style settings on a particular page.

   <style>.leftpane {width: 175px}</style>

PORTAL-BY-PORTAL:
Use the site's STYLESHEET EDITOR (under ADMIN->SITE SETTINGS) to override style settings for a particular portal.

(Find the ".leftpane" entry and set the width attribute or simply add a new ".leftpane" entry to the bottom of the CSS to override any previous entry)

I often work with dozens of portals within the same DNN instance (multiple portals sharing the same set of DNN skins).  I find it very useful to leave the default "host" skin files intact and make any desired changes at the portal or page level so that a style change for one page/portal does not affect other portals.

Cheers!

Hi

Thanks to all for the hepful replies.  I had yet another go at reloading them but I suspect the fix came in deleting the cache.  Site looks good now.

Thanks for the suggestions - I will be frequently visiting the forum and hope to learn much more.  DNN rocks!! :)
