I followed the instructions still I can't install DNN 4.02

I'm working on Windows Server 2003 R2, SQL Express 2005, SQL Server Management Studion Express, .Net Framework 2.

I made everything in the documentation when I tried

http://localhost/DotNetNuke/ I just got

Could not find file 'J:\Inetpub\wwwroot\DotNetNuke\SiteUrls.config'. 

So I tried http://localhost/DotNetNuke/Install/Install.aspx but I got

Could not find file 'J:\Inetpub\wwwroot\DotNetNuke\Providers\DataProviders\SqlDataProvider\DotNetNuke_template.mdf'.

 How TO Install DNN PLZ

I'm going to join in here out of pure frustration - Help - I'm at a loss.

My platform - XP sp2, IIS 5.1, I had .net 1.1 installed then installed .net 2, and I then installed SQL Express 2005.

I downloaded the source version of code for 4.02, and I followed the DNN Installation Guide as best I could.  The doc has you jumping back and forth between instructions for v3 and v4, and makes some assumptions in the process. Not good.

Some comments...
The siteurls.config file is distributed in the website\config folder.  Shouldn't it be in the website folder?

SQL Express setup - Or any SQL for that matter.  Did I miss the doc on what settings were specific to DNN? In this forum I finally found info stating that windows and sql authentication was the supported setting.  Hmm.  Seems a doc would be beneficial here - Don't you think?  And step-by-step test instructions too... Maybe?  I'm not an sql pro so that seems like a handy idea to me.  Also, here's where the installation guide made some assumptions - that the reader installing 4 would know to go back to the instructions for 3 and do all those steps, too, but know what it says in the v4 section so you know the exceptions of what extra, or what not to do that is instructed in the section for v3.  Oh.  OK. That was all really clear - especially to us new guys.

My error is the same as the OP of this thread, and I get it when I try to first run DNN.  I'm on a fairly zippy laptop, and it pops up after a few seconds of hard drive activity.  From this forum I see I'm not the only one.

Could not find file 'c:\inetpub\www_dotnetnuke_2\providers\dataproviders\sqldataprovider\dotnetnuke_template.mdf'.

I downloaded the Server Management Studio Express so I could change my installation from windows authentication to mixed.  I also needed this optional program so I could create the DotNetNuke database, login and user.  Seems a little lacking on specificity here, but maybe I got all the essential details.

In Server Config Manager I enabled named pipes. Sometimes I'd get different results saying that a connection to the database couldn't be made because of named pipes.  If named pipes is the method used by DNN that sure seems like a handy piece of information.  Where is the doc on SQL Server setup?

From this forum I read of people who were using SQLExpress but changed their web.config to use the full sql server 2000/2005 connectionstring and appsetting. I tried that, too, and got a far more robust message.  It too is listed here in the install forum by other users. The obvious gist of this error is I'm having user login problems. I verified mine was working by logging in using the Server Management Studio Express.  I guess that's a good test.  Is it?

The web.config lines in the connectionstring and appsetting areas don't come in distribution with the uid and pwd statements in the lines.  The installation guide for version 3 shows them, but not the instructions for version 4.  Are they needed or not in v4?  Well, how can they be avoided - so of course they're needed.

Why is the appsetting line in v3 for the sql connection (as shown in the install guide) different than the appsetting line that comes in distribution?  If it's for legacy support then isn't v3 the legacy that's being supported?  So why is it different?


I obviously have lots of questions.  The Installation Guide didn't get them answered too well, or I'm lousy with instructions.

Any advice for me?

create a empty DB in SQL Server named: dotnetnuke_template.mdf

add a user and pwd to it.

save the template db to Providers\DataProviders\SqlDataProvider under your DNN installation
