Hi everybody,

I have been searching around the web and I stumbled upon a company that is selling their own CMS system online, and they are charging an annual license fee for it. From the snapshots on their website, and even the URL icon on their site, you can see that they are using DotNetNuke.

Is that Legal?

Thanks,

This is legal, though they can't call it DotNetNuke or use the logos are they are Trademarked.

The license for DNN is very liberal and open, you can basically do whatever you want with it as long as you don't call it DNN.

Thanks Chris.

I have installed DNN for someone that wanted a low budget CMS, but I let him know about DNN and the open source concept. I believe you should give credit to the people that created something like this, and not take it for yourself.

That's why I was kinda shocked when I saw them selling it under their label as their own CMS.....

Thanks again,

Marios

Though it is legal to sell DotNetNuke, it might become a problem for the vendor, when a client gets to know, that he bought sth, he can get for free on the internet. IMHO the question is, whether the vendor adds other products or services to improve the value of his "branded" CMS.

Marios,

I lot of businesses use the DotNetNuke framework as part of an overall service offering (including us).  If they are just offering the core package then as  Sebastian has said, in time there clients are probably going to be 'dissappointed' with them when they find out the core is Open source.  However, this is usually an exception.  Generally the core is packaged with other services such as hosting, support and customization.

Another thing to consider is that some businesses take the Core and seriously modify it to fit thier purpose.  If they do this this then per the DotNetNuke trademark policy they cannot distribute the result under the DotNetNuke trademarks, even if the look is reconisable. (See the Trademark policy http://www.dotnetnuke.com/LinkClick.aspx?link=Documents/DotNetNuke%20Trademark%20Policy.pdf&tabid=703&mid=1344 ).
