Hi all,

I recently decided to reinstall DNN.  I kept the old database (don't know if i can do this, i hope so) and set the connection string.  The problem i'm having is the portal alias.  I'm not really sure what i'm doing with the portal alias so i'll just tell you whats happened so far.

I created a virtual directory called localhost/dnn which points to my website directory.  I checked the database and in dbo.PortalAlias there is an entry that has the HTTPAlias localhost/DotnetNuke_test.  When i try to browse localhost/dnn i am redirected to localhost/DotnetNuke_test.

I then tried changing the db entry to localhost/dnn and recieved a redirect loop error.  Would be very grateful of any help. Thanks

Simon

Ok, i set the portal alias in the db to nothing and i stop getting the redirect loop error and instead get a Invalid URI: The hostname could not be parsed. error instead.

Ok thats that problem solved.

I am having problems with my connectionStrings.  I created a new database in SQL 2005.  I've used the same strings as i did for my previous install of dnn but changed the db name.  I'm guessing there is a permissions problem with the database as i keep getting:

ERROR: Could not connect to database specified in connectionString for SqlDataProvider

I'm using SQL Server Management Studio to admin the db. I have changed the two strings in web.config.  I'm not sure what to do next.

Does anyone have any step by step guides on installing from scratch as i can't figure out why this install isn't working and the last one did.

Ok got past that error, it was to do with db_owner.  Anyway new problem.

I started the install and got as far as the page which says 'Install Optional Skins and Containers'.  I clicked next and was presented with a Object reference not set to an instance of an object error.  Anyone know why?

At first i assumed it was because i couldn't access the db but the install process managed to create all the tables ok. Here's the full error i get when i browse the site:

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
