I will add, although perhaps a totally different issue, it took about 1 minute from when I hit submit for that last post until it 'took.' For me and my clients working on sites this is a continuing frsutration - are there any insights on "admin speed?"

thanks,

Will

Yes.  Changing the menu system in DotNetNuke can really improve your performance.  When we built PowerDNN.com, we originally built it using an off-the-shelf menu component for DotNetNuke but the performance was actually really, really bad (We have 5 levels of menus, so no wonder!).  In order to get the performance we need, we custom built a high-speed, high performance menu system we call PowerMenu.  Not to toot my own horn (ok, maybe a little.  :) ) but it is hands down the fastest menu system I've ever seen for DotNetNuke and I've even had a developer of a competiting menu system test it who was totally amazed at how fast it runs (it takes only about 50ms in its worst-case scenerio).

If anyone out there is interested in writing some documentation, email me.  :)

Could you please explain "use a more liteweight menu" or suggest a resource for learning more about this?

most of the menus available are faster and more XHTML compliant than old SolPart, you could try DNNMenu (included in DNN installation), HouseMenu or any commercial menu around, check out the Marketplace and Snowcovered. Since I am no Skinner, I can hardly recommend one.

Please notice, that on a heavily used large site as dotnetnuke.com it sometimes may take a couple of seconds, until a complex page is rendered, especially for authenticated users. Especially the forums module is a large module which needs a couple of database calls on updates and has a large HTML footprint to download (especially, since it doesn't use AJAX yet and the whole page needs to be rerendered). Please be aware, that each site and module is different, making it difficult to provide simple tips for performance improvement.

Hi John

You ask:

What was the "muddle" on the PageBlaster site?

What threw me was that I followed the link on your post which took me to a store page where you are asking people to click a Buy Now link and go through a Shopping Cart and Checkout process to download software that costs $0.  If you come in at this point, as I did, it's not clear the Community Edition really means free and the Terms and Conditions you ask me to read through don't help (the explanation is in your download which you get to later). Then I got to a screen with a license code and a download link. When I clicked the download link it wasn't working. So I began to wonder if I should have added some money (it asks me to pay whatever I think) and, if so, how time-limited or hobbled the Community Edition would be. Remember, I am a bit nervous about installing something as radical as Page Blaster on a remotely-hosted machine. I don't know yet quite how it works. So I concluded that if the documentation is no more coherent than the buying process I wouldn't risk it.

Sorry John but that's what went through my mind. I just tried it again and this time the download worked. I have just looked in the documentation that came in the download and, frankly, descriptions of what to do if you get this or that error (though essential) don't inspire me to risk messing up a working site and consider giving it a try.

I will try Page Blaster on a less critical site when I have more time. I hope you take this in the spirit intended. Constructive criticism between friends is the sincerest kindness.

Kind regards

Geoffrey
