I want to use DNN for a Masters Project I am doing but not sure if I am doing the right steps and have some questions.  I do have a domain name and a hosting company that supports DNN.  Would it be better to put the DNN out there and start there or install it on my laptop and work from there.  I have experience creating websites using HTML and a little ASP.Net.  Would it be better to use a system as a server, then login using a laptop?  Maybe I am putting too much thought into this but since I never used DNN and not sure the best way to start.  Thank you

Hi, dranderson-
There's no one "correct" approach but I'd recommend that, for each new step you take with your DNN site, test the step on a local DNN installation (laptop) first then repeat the step on your hosted copy ("live" website) once you're comfortable with the change/addition.  This helps to insure that your "live" site is always online and available.  It's also usually easier to troubleshoot a locally-installed copy of DNN rather than a hosted copy.

For large changes (such as module installations/upgrades), you should create a backup copy of your DNN database and all DNN files so you can restore your site to a working state if the change goes badly.

Thank you.  I guess for starters, would you download the Starter Kit or the Install Package?  The one thing I get confused on - when it comes to editing the site, I know you can do it on Visual Studio or Dreamweaver but have heard of other editors such as FCKeditor - what is recommended?

The install package is the one you need.

Here is some instructions:

http://adefwebserver.com/DotNetNukeHELP/DNN4_DevelopmentEnvironment_noIIS/

In that instruction, it says "download Visual Web Developer 2005" but now it's 2008. You can download it from here: http://www.microsoft.com/express/vwd/

It sounds like you just started using Web Content Management System. Editting templates & Editting contents are separate thing. It's just hard to explain it here. You just gotta use it and I promise you'll like it :)
