I am trying to use Output params with a DAL+ method (I have this working with the MS DataBlock and the old DAL):

                reader = DataProvider.Instance().ExecuteReader("StoredProcNamexyz", portalID, out totalUsersParam);

                if (totalUsersParam.Value != null)
                {
                    totalUsers = Convert.ToInt32(totalUsersParam.Value);
                }
                else
                {
                    totalUsers = 0;
                }

the Instance().ExecuteReader has this method signature:

public abstract IDataReader ExecuteReader(string ProcedureName, params object[] commandParameters);

It does not seem to cater for returning a recordset AND an out param. Has anyone got the DAL+ working with output params?

Here is another way I tried (which works with the MS DataBlock, but not with the DAL+)

SqlParameter[] oSQLParam = new SqlParameter[2];

                oSQLParam[0] = new SqlParameter("@portalID", portalID);
                oSQLParam[0].Direction = ParameterDirection.Input;

                SqlParameter totalRowsParam;
                totalRowsParam = new SqlParameter("@TotalUsers", SqlDbType.Int);
                oSQLParam[1] = totalRowsParam;
                oSQLParam[1].Direction = ParameterDirection.Output;

                reader = DataProvider.Instance().ExecuteReader("xyz", oSQLParam);

                if (totalRowsParam.Value != null)
                {
                    totalUsers = Convert.ToInt32(totalRowsParam.Value);
                }
                else
                {
                    totalUsers = 0;
                }

It is always null. The stored proc returns the value correctly when I execute it via Query Analyzer. All I want to know is if anyone has ever used the DAL+ for return params with the ExecuteReader method?

Michael? I was hoping you would have tried this on DAL+?

This is very frustrating, has no one used the DAL+ with output params? I would have thought this would be a common scenario...

Rodney,

DAL+ uses the generic SQL commands provided in DotNetNuke.Data, which do NOT support OUT parameters for stored procedures. All parameters are passed by value (IN).

ExecuteReader and ExecuteSQL allow to access a returned result set as IDataReader, while ExecuteDataSet provides the calling method with a dataReader. Besides, ExecuteScalar allows to process a returned single value of any type (check out here for documentation of the underlying block, how to call ExecuteScalar).

Either return a result set or return a single value, but do not return values using parameters (OUT or INOUT).
