I recently ground through a push from a development DNN to a production DNN.  I didn't automatically just move everything because somethings shouldn't be the same in both places such as Users, aspnet_membership..., schedule, eventlog, etc.  One of the things I couldn't quite figure out is the relationship between Folders / FolderPermission / Files.  It looks like Folders mimics the actual directory structure under Portals.  In fact I failed to copy a set of Folder rows associated with a new portal and couldn't get access to anything on that Portal's directories until I did copy over the Folder and FolderPermission.  What I can't figure out is how to independently define and set those rows, if required.  Additionally I couldn't figure out how entries in Files are created, and if they represent actual files under Portals, how do you resynch the table with what's in the directories?  And if the contents of the Production Portal is different than the contents of the Development Portal, what's the best way to synch them. Do I need to worry about any directories other than Portals?  Finally I couldn't figure out how the Skins row entries fit into all this.

Any help here would be appreciated.

SynchronizeFoder in DotNetNuke.Services.Files.FileSystemUtils does index all files and subfolders and place associated entries in Files and Folders tables of your database. The problem after moving to a different portal lies in the fact, that a number of files may be referenced by fileID and those references will be lost due to a different ID associated with your files.
