I went through the tedious steps in the (not up to date) installation document for setting up my "database".  Ok so the agreed to plan was to do ABC but when i tried to complete the installation, your installation script decided to do XYZ. Why is it asking me for a database FILE name, instead of a database name? Why is there already an MDF file in the APP_DATA folder? And why cant this installation ask me the right questions? I created a Database named DNNexpress, with User and Login DNNuser (db_owner). But this thing has a mind of its own. I tried to play it's game and let it install by selecting the server authentication mode. then it took off and pretended to be running the installation scripts....but where, against what database? in what galaxy? Finally I killed it! Uh this thing aint ready for prime time.

there are 2 diffierent kinds of datanase setups provided:

  • "Classic" requires you to create a blank database, a SQL Server login and granting db owner permission for the database to it
  • "file based" uses a delivered database.mdf file (which you should never touch using a database tool.
  • Both shall be available to all versions of SQL Server 2005/2008 (though the captions in the DNN install wizard suggests sth different)
