Ok I've been through these forums trying to figure out this problem ... i've followed the suggestions and still I'm getting this error.  I just installed DNN 4.0 on my windows XP machine.  I'm using VS.NET 2005 Professional.  I opted to use the starter kit.  I followed the install instructions.  The install completed but when I navigate access my portal I get this error.

Yes I've set permissions for the aspnet user to full control for my web directory.  Yes I have IIS configured for .NET 2.0 instead of 1.0

No this thing still isn't working.  If I've left something out please let me know as this is entering into the frustation stage.  Here is the error:

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks.

Yes I renamed the web.config.  I got it working ... what i ended up doing was deleting everything from my database and running the install again.

This time it completed successfully.
Thanks!
