1) when I try to make a child portal with the subdomain (e.g., subdomain.site.com) as the alias, DNN tells me "The Portal Name Must Not Contain Spaces Or Punctuation"

2) if I try to make a parent instead, it seems to not actually be creating a separate site with pages independent of the original, i.e., if I add or delete a page on one site, the same thing happens on the new portal, if that makes sense. and the new logins for the portal don't work, either.

what am I doing wrong?? Please help!!

For #1, you can not use punctuation/spaces - you should call it "somename", then the URL will be site.com/somename

For #2, if the new logins for the new portal do not work, then how can you add a new page?  You were probably still logged into the first portal.  And if you want a URL sub.site.com then yes you must use a parent portal.
