Hi guys, Happy New Year!

I'm aiming to go for a clean install of 4.9.01 on a web hosted remote server, but I'm a little confused by some of the great guides I've read.

The hosting provider is looking after the sql databases etc., so no problems there.

The installation guide from this site (pdf download) seems to focus on local/intranet servers, not remote web hosting. However, since I am web hosting, I understand that the easiest download package to do this with is the install.zip, NOT the starter.Zip? Can someone confirm?

In the meantime I've downloaded the 'install' files and unzipped.

The guides generally recommending making manual changes to the release.config and then renaming to web.config BUT there's already a web.config in the unzipped folder. What's the story here, should I be deleting the unzipped web.config and replacing?

Finally, I'm getting the idea that the software should be self-installing on the website when I browse to it BUT some guides seem to be recommending just browsing to the root folder, and some seem to be recommending going to /install/install.aspx

Which is the right answer?

  • use Install.zip, StarterKit is for use by developers in Visual Studio
  • upload and unzip, grant permission and call the site tos tart the wizard, which will take care of the web.config changes for you.

Thanks Jeff.

Regarding the differences.  I recommend using release.config as it ensures that everything is set for production use.  I also recommend using the install/install.aspx path to trigger the install because my recommended change to the "AutoUpgrade" will prevent DNN from installing automatically in some cases, it provides for a more secure installation, but slighly more work to install.
