In the new module I created I wanted to be able to set a portal wide global setting so that all module instances used this setting thus eliminating the user having to reenter the same value for all instance of the module. While I was at it I created a way to do host wide global settings too. It is a dll that just needs to be dropped in the bin folder after which a small SQL script needs to be run. Once that is done modules can then use this to set global settings.

I don't mind giving the modification away free of charge, but I am not sure what I should classify this as. It is not a module that can be placed on a page so I don’t want to call this a module. Is there anything else like this? Any suggestions? A plugin? An addon?

Robert,

this might not be the answer, you expected, but did you have a look at PortalSettings and HostSettings Tables and associated BCL? You might check out, how FCKEditor stores its custom settings - though there might be still room for improvement.

Cool! Thanks Subastian I will look into it. All the time was creating this addon I was thinking there has to be something like this in place already.
