Failed to load view state. The control tree into which view state is being loaded must match the control tree that was used to save view state during the previous request.

Ran dnn 5 upgrade without errors, clicked "click here to access your portal" and then tried logging in and got this view state message and was kicked back to the public view home page - no administration page.  I have no control over my portal at this point, I'm backed up but I'd rather press on.  Can anyone help?

I'm running IIS 6 and I've just tried to install .net 3.5 w/sp1 it looked like it installed (asked me to restart and I let it) but I can't choose it as an option for my website in IIS - I can only apply v1 and v2.  I do have a c:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\3.5 folder but that's the only indication that the 3.5 framework is installed.

I don't know if the framework version is the answer to my view state error or not, could use some help.

Darin

I am having this same issue but it is not consistent at all. On my site you cannot go further then the main page without logging in, and out of the 50 or so people that log in per day, we are randomly getting 3 or 4 per day having this exception show up once they click "Login". If anyone has any info it would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE:
It appears that this occurs when users go to the main page and click "Login" before the entire page has loaded. If you wait for all images to load then click login there is no problem at all. We can at least now duplicate the error but have yet to find a viable solution besides making the main, unauthenticated page load faster. If anyone knows why DNN5 needs the entire page to load please let us know.

All please state which versions of DNN you upgraded from - if you managed to resolve the problem let us know

OK things to try from top of my head...

1) Clear browser cache
2) Clear browser cookies
3) Restart IIS (Now test)
4) Host/Extensions: If LiveID and OpenID Authentication is there disable it (Now test).
5) Restart IIS (Now test).
6) Host/Host Settings - Try playing with your page state persistance and module caching methods.

Is anybody using any third party modules (page blaster?).
Anybody else have any other comments here?

NB - Always backup your files/database.

Alex Shirley
