Storing the information in the Personalization object should work in most cases. If you only need to stre infomation for a single page I woudl use the v13wstat3.

Yes, there are occasionally reasons to use session variables (I use one to pass data to Ventrians Private Messaging module for example) where it makes sense.

For passing data between pages in the same module there may be easier, more efficient ways. I cache a lot of my custom objects so I just pass the keyID around in the URL and retrieve it again (from the cache) on the next page.

Do not under estimate the importance of SEO with using a querystring param like this - for example, using the Smart-Thinker UserProfile module, every single user profile on PokerDIY is a separate, indexable page (with the UserID as the key) - all ST modules use this architecuture to create lots of Google food...
