I need to write a scheduler class that needs to select records from a certain table. Then, according to date values, emails need to be sent from the portal to notify people that the dates are approaching. This table is a custom defined table.

I have found examples on how to write a schedule class, but not how to simply select records from a table and loop through them. Furthermore, how would one get the connectionstring variables while the schedule class is processing?

Also, can one use something like smtp to send emails?
