I'm in the process of migrating a completed, ready for production, DNN website from a staging server out of town to a new location. Along with my site, the backend SQL database has also been back-up and restored at the new locations IIS box. I now have all directories along with scripts transfered. Specifically, my concern is to keep the site in it's original form when I restore. What other details must I change in the web config file to make this happen? do I need to change the validationKey & decryptionKey in the config? could you show me an example I could follow? There may be a simple answer to this! Im somewhere in the middle between new install & upgrade. Please advise!

Many thanks as always,

Darryl Peterson

In case you haven't seen it, yet, check this (somewhat old) blog post for the basics:

http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Blogs/tabid/825/EntryId/1293/HOW-TO-Move-a-DotNetNuke-installation.aspx

The main thing you'll want to do that you did not mention is to update your portal alias settings to match the site's "live" URL(s) on the new system.

Another tip to help when moving sites between servers, when you want to preview the live domain and make sure it's working..... Edit your desktop computers 'Hosts file' to enable you to see your 2nd/new instance of your website by typing in the normal full domain name in your browser.

The hosts file can be found in: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc and a new line can be added to force your computers DNS to think that yourdomain.com is now in fact residing on a server at IP address 92.123.123.123

Vista users may find a few security issues when trying to edit this file and when you're done don't forget to change it back!

An example of a hosts file:

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost
92.123.123.123 mydomain.com
