Hi,

I'm having the same problem as schwank.  I can get all the way to the db install and then it stops working.  There are a bunch of js errors.  The first time I found that the $() came up as undifined.  So the call $('txtFeedback').value += s; failed and I was seeing no progress in the window.  So I just put a quick fix on that, and changeded it do document.getElementById and I then could see the first step, that indicated it was installing db version 4.4.0.  But then it throws and error that dnn is not defined on line 88 of the installwizard.aspx page.  So I jumpped over to the js files and see there is a dnn.js file.  So I'm guess that is where I would find the definition for the dnn object, but in there is just a big list of .net stack traces "[SqlException]: Could not find stored procedure 'dbo.GetHostSettings'."

I got this just using all the default settings and clicking next.

Are you using port 80 or not? If not...

Did you follow my advice about web.config (please check first). Then have a look at what John has to say.

Would appreciate some feedback from all parties.

Thanks

Alex Shirley

Alex,

I got my install to work.  It wasn't pretty, and didn't follow the defaults.  What I ended up doing was;  First I setup IIS so that DNN was the default website.  Then I had to create a database using SSMSE, instead of using the one that comes in the project file.  The mdf in the project wouldn't let me login to it, and when I managed to update it so my user could login, I then could make it so the aspnet user could login to it.  It also kept freezing on me and telling me it was in use by another process or that it didn't have any space left to save changes.  Anyway, when I got to the db connection details I choose the radio button for regular sql 2005/2000.  Gave it the login details and presto it installed the db.

So pretty much there wasn't a single step that worked in the default directions that come with DNN when you try to create the project with VS.

If you want a straight forward DNN installation with no problems, I've found that the following works pretty much everytime for a quick demo setup AND follows the instructions pretty much spot-on.

START: Log into or Remote Desktop directly into the webserver you want to install DNN onto (probably a test server if you just want to demo the thing).

1. Create the virtual directory within the default website in IIS and setup for ASP.NET 2.0 and allow anonymous.

2. Give Network Service (Win2k3) user full folder rights to DNN directory through Windows Explorer.

3. Unzip the dnn install zip file into your virtual directory, rename the web.config to something else and rename release.config to web.config

4. Create a new database in the full blown version of SQL Server 2000 or higher (if you have it) with enterprise manager - the developer version is free for Microsoft partners (and maybe non-partners??).

5. Create a new database user under the security folder in enterprise manager, give them access to your DNN database and make this user the DBOWNER.

6. Back in your newly renamed web.config (previously release.config), change your connection strings to point to the IP address or domain name of your database server as well as your new dbuser and password.

7. Open up the web server's browser and type in http://localhost/YourDnnDomain/

8. When the DNN setup starts up, just select 'Typical' - the custom one usually bombs.

With those above steps, I have never had trouble installing DNN through multiple minor versions of 4.*

Obviously if you are installing on GoDaddy or any kind of environment beyond a 2-tier demo system, it could get hairy. But the above should work 99% of the time, in my experience.

If this is what it takes simply to install this program then I won't be doing it. Honestly if DNN  is trying to gain market share I don't know what they're thinking. I know someone who has zero experience doing stuff like this who has a beautiful Joomla website. Why is Joomla growing furiously while  DNN, a supposedly superior product, is languishing? - look no further than this. There are alot more non-developers out there than developers; alot of people like myself who want to build interactive websites that communicate with their clients.

I went from frontpage to expression web to asp.net - DNN is perfect for me - I am you're base! (I thought I was anyway). I'm going from a static website to an interactive one. I don't want to go  the PHP route but if thats what it takes to a CMS system going thats what I'll have to do.

The easy, automatic install didn't work for me!
