After many failed attempts I was finally able to make a clean install of DNN 5.0 on My Hosted site (DiscountASP).  My environment there is Windows 2008/IIS7 and SQL Server 2008.

But when I try to access the portal I get a very simple error message.

DotNetNuke Error: - Version 05.00.00

Error An error has occurred.
An error has occurred.

If I look at the page source in my browser I see: "Error=Object+reference+not+set+to+an+instance+of+an+object.&content=0"

There is a thread on a forum as ASP.NET but that goes all the way back to DNN Version 3 (http://forums.asp.net/t/873993.aspx) so I can't believe that problem was not fixed in the meantime. Plus I really don't want to modify DNN source and have different version of DNN than the official version.

I also don't understand why everyone is not having this problem.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

if you have access to the web.config file, edit or reupload it; this will restart the application and often "repairs" this issue.

Danke!

I re-uploaded the web.config and got a clean install again and am now able to access the site.  However, I cannot log in either as host or admin.

I found a thread (http://www.dnncreative.com/Forum/tabid/88/forumid/13/postid/7635/view/topic/Default.aspx) that suggested there might be a problem with the machineKey setting, but I checked and these have been the same for each upload of the web.config.

Any suggestions for the login problem?

Bill

oops, machine key gets randomized on install, i.e. it might be different. if you have direct access to the database, you may regain access with the following trick: http://www.deutschnetnuke.de/tabid/183/Default.aspx
