I've been doing a lot of research on web hosting providers and had planned to host multiple sites on on DNN Install.

I was told by one DNN host they don't recommend it.  How many sites do people host on one install and what criteria do you use to decide when to add another installation?

Thanks

The following is personal opinion -

The question of whether to indulge in multiple portals per DNN install is less technical and more a business consideration.

You have multiple clients with data on a single database, and in the same tables. High usage by one site might affect performance on another; sensitive data or ecommerce solutions on one site might make it inadvisable to mix their data with that of other unrelated companies; and cetera.

There is no reason not to have multiple portals on an install from a hosting perspective in particular. It is best to have multple portals when they are all related - a number of portals for a single institution - rather than unrelated businesses.

Hi Doug,

I would highly recommend that you take a look at this article that talks about multiple portals in the same DNN install:

My advice is that you only do it if you don't care about the sites that you're throwing all together.  If you're doing websites for your mom, your dad, your cat, and your fish, then multiple portals are ok, however, if they are of anything of importance, I would recommend staying far away from portals - there are some exceptions to this, but as a general rule, you will never go wrong using multiple installs.
