So these images would be something larger that are not part of the actual navigation I guess?

So if you hovered over "News" it might be a larger picture of a guy reading a newspaper?

Exactly! Right above "news" we would get that picture.

And now is the part where you tell me it can't be done in DNN-right?

I'll have to give that one some thought. 

I'm not too good with the core navigation menu because I use my own, but you should be able to hook into the mouseover event and with some other javascript change a picture in the area you are talking about.

I'm pretty sure you won't be able to do it without modifying some javascript though, are you comfortable with that?

John,

Took a look at your site-liked your menu and will probably be able to use it for another project-this client is a bit of a challenge (as opposed to everybody else's clients )

Don't mind modifying the javascript-been a vignette developer for the past five years but am having to learn .net and DNN now-I appreciate all the help.
