Hi all,

I've been working on www.workoutbox.com for the last few months and were getting close to our public launch.    Before we do, I thought I'd get the techie DNN opinion as if you guys dont like it, hell id better start over! :)  Few things left to come but the framework of the site is now up.

I'd really appreciate it if you could take 5 mins and have a quite look at the site, and then let me know your opinion on:

1 - Site Design

I have DrNuke to thank here. The main design is based on his flex skin but with a few tweaks. There's still a few design bugs in IE that need to be tidyied up.

2 - Site Performance / Speed

The site's hosted with DiscountASP (US datacentre) in a shared hosting environment.  I'm based in the UK but my main target market is the US, so its tricky for me to fully judge the sites performance.

  • Pinging Workoutbox.com takes 170ms for me.  I'd be really keen for a few people stateside to tryout a ping test and let me know the results :)
  • I have tweaked the DNN performance settings as per this article but am considering purchasing the PageBlaster module.  Can anyone give any feedback on it?
  • Currently just viewing my homepage requires almost 400kb worth of CSS/JS and images.  Whats the standard for a DNN site, im guessing im way over it?

Thanks again for your time,

Simon Turner

I like the clean design.

On the skinning part I have some suggestions:

The page is not XHTML compliant, that is probably the reason you did not notice there are some HTML errors on the page.

(mostly TR and TD in the wrong order) That might cause rendering issues in different browsers.

Also you have 35 tables on the page, which makes the page quite slow to build up.

Try to use more divs

Hi Simon,

I like the design, it looks very nice. You are smart to start focusing on performance.
Using the Free PageBlaster will improve performance a lot with automatic optimizations to your CSS & JS files.

I would also recommend switching out the Javascript driven Solpart menu with a light weight DotNetNuke CSS Menu.

Thanks for your feedback :).

I'm not a web / front end developer at heart and therefore don't know the best practices for everything.  I've checked the site over at http://validator.w3.org and sure, its certainly not valid.  Not sure If i can justify the time spent for me to sort it all out though.

How exactly did you spot the TR and TD's in the wrong order as I didnt see that picked up in the w3 report, and its certainly something I should fix.

Will try and use more DIV's in the future, but again not sure if i can justify the time needed to redesign and fix it.

Simon,

The design is nice and crisp, and reflects well on the site's area of interest - making folks lean.  Navigation seems a bit slow, but that may be related to some of the issues already mentioned.  It was't terrible compared to other site's I've visited, though, but it woud benefit from the tune-ups suggested.

I was able to ping the site, just a quick 10 count result:

Pinging www.workoutbox.com [216.177.71.9] with 32 bytes of data:

Ping statistics for 216.177.71.9:
    Packets: Sent = 10, Received = 10, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 66ms, Maximum = 81ms, Average = 70ms

So, it's a bit better state side than from the UK, but I would expect that considering you are hosted in the USA.

Now, all of that being said, I really shouldn't have looked at your side while at lunch, eating my fried tenderloin, and fried onion rings.  Now, I'm going to have to get to your site at home, and start with the rookie program.  I think it's a nice looking site, and folks will find it beneficial.  Good job!
