I have a few questions concerning the upgrading to DNN 5.  I had attempted to upgrade recently but found that it was too difficult to understand the changes made to my website after installation that I converted back to 4.9.0.

1.  After I upgrade why are the modules which were placed on pages in 4.9 not showing up in 5.0? These modules do show in the drop downlist in the Control Panel view.

2.  Do I have to re-install all the modules individually after an upgrade?  I did do this to some of the modules and then they appeared on the page, but found it too cumbersome to re-install every single module.  They did not show up in module definitions of 5.0.

3.  What is the most pain-free way to upgrade to prevent the above problems?

JJ, personally, I would upgrade to 4.9.1 and stay there for a bit longer. There are a few issues with 5.0.0 that would prevent me from using it in a production environment.

There are a number of blog posts out there discussing how to upgrade. Personally I would do this.

1. Backup everything, website and database

2. Download the 4.9.1 upgrade package from dotnetnuke.com

3. Extract the upgrade package to a folder on the computer

4. Copy the contents of the upgrade package directly over your current DNN site

5. Hit the site and make sure it upgrades.

It should be that simple, you do not have to reinstall modules when you upgrade a DNN site unless something went terribly wrong.

Pretty sure I did everything I was supposed to do correctly.  I did backup then downloaded 4.9.1, then downloaded my web.config, then uploaded 4.9.1 to my host - unzipped it, deleted web.config, copied and renamed release.config as web.config, then made appropriate changes to new web.config....then I went to browse my site I kept getting a web.config error......SO i reinstalled my backup......

JJ-
First, I agree with everything Chris suggested.

Regarding your question on modules missing from pages after upgrading to 5.0:
After adding modules to your pages under DNN 4.x, did you ever change the skin either before or after the upgrade to 5.0?  There is a bug in 5.0 where content pane names are treated as case-sensitive (they should not be) sometimes resulting in modules becoming orphaned from their parent pane.

Example:  If in DNN 4.x you added a module to a page in pane "RightPane", changed to a new skin that called the pane "rightpane", then upgraded to 5.0 you'd have a problem even though you kept the same skin.  This bug will be fixed in the upcoming 5.0.1 release.

Summary List of Bugs in DNN 5.0
For what it's worth, I've recently combed Gemini and compiled a "human-friendly" list of such 5.0 bugs:
