Hi There,

Before I attempt an upgrade to version 5 I have decided to make a development copy of my live server. First time I've attempted this.

OK, so I copied the database and files and put them on my local server. I changed Portal Aliases etc and I can successfully browse the local site. The problem is however, I cannot login. If I check the users table, all the accounts are there. It just doesn't recognise my passwords.

I am thinking this may have something to do with the MachineKey in the web.config file, but all the information I've read about making a local copy of DNN does not mention these problems. The web.config is the same files as is on the live server (apart from the SQL connection string).

Any guidance appreciated.

OK, problem solved.

Some how the keys had been overritten by new keys. It's strange because the web.config file was copied from the live server and only the SQL string modified. So what would write new validation and encryption keys to the file??

please compare machine keys in your dev env with live server again, they might have been regenerated during first attempt to access your site.
