I am such a newbie that it was literally last week that I first heard about DNN. I wish to learn all about DNN as I run a local non-profit website that I am currently updating. I would like to update the site to use DNN. So, how do I install DNN? Do I need to install it on a server or can I install it on my personal home pc and create a website at home. Any help would be appreciated.

You can download the documentation from the Downloads link at the top of the page. Also Mitchel Sellers has some good blogs on installing DNN. They may not be for the version you're planning on using but the process is the same. http://www.mitchelsellers.com/blogs/top-10-lists.aspx

Be aware that the documentation download is not current but you can still learn a great deal about DotNetNuke.

To me, the easiest way to learn DNN is to download visual web developer and sql server express from Microsoft. Google those names and download the software. Now install the software.

Download the

  • Starter Kit Package  -  Contains only the files needed to configure a development environment in Visual Web Developer Express or Visual Studio 2005 Install the starter kit and then go to load Visual Web Developer.
Go to File New Website and click on the DotNetNuke Template. You can name your site here as well.
When that loads up you'll see the files for DNN listed on the right.
Hold Ctrl F5 key to load.
After that you can select Auto from the radio button.
Scroll down and you'll see Click to Access Portal.
Now login in and learn DNN.

I'll be doing a presentation on Saturday in South Florida if you live in that area at the South Florida Code Camp. There will be plenty of other DNN sessions going on that day. Good luck.
