What should prevent me from going straight from 4.5.1 to 4.9.1 in one upgrade step?

Also, am I old school on this, b/c I used to think it was necessary to copy from old web.config to new web.config the connection string settings, installation date, and machine key.  Some part of my brain tells me I recently read one of Mitchel's articles that stated w/a certain version you could just drop all the new files in on top of your old stuff and it would upgrade the site?

CORRECTION: Actually, the current version of this particular installation is 04.05.05, not 04.05.01... FYI

it was 4.6.2 that introduced web.config merging, so a lot of people choose to upgrade to that version first and then upgrade to the latest i.e. 4.5.1->4.62 followed by 4.6.2 -> 4.9.1
