Hi,

I am using DNN 4.9 and my websit www.winjit.com is running. Now it is critical for me to take the backup of the SQLExpress i.e. database.mdf on my local server from the remote server. I want to take the backup without stopping the web services. Is it Possible? If yes how? Is there any way to take the backup through the DNN portal?

Please reply urgently.

The best way is to stop web services and copy the file (genreally in App_Data) in database folder and start web services if you are using Express.

Site should not be down for long if you are quick about it, otherwise consider using full version of SQL Server.

If you use Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express (free) you can add a script that takes the backup without stopping the web service.

The script is not part of the express version but If you need it let me know.

Well you learn something new everyday.

One thing I find with scripting solutions for backups is that they can be pretty fiddly and unreliable (often get out of memory errors, often I have to have to split up the scripts and it can lead to issues), maybe I'm completely missing something here.

Alex thanks for your informative post.

How do you think Sql Server do the backup?

Google Sql Backup

My script is not fiddly and unreiable and have never any memory error.

Thanks
