I'm trying to understand the differences between the parent and child portals. I am confused as to what they do in DNN5 after I've installed it. Based on my understanding, the parent portal represents a unique domain name or two, while the child portal represents subdomain/s. Is that right?

you're almost correct. They're both ways to create new portals. Child portals create a folder to allow for new portals to be correctly directed, whereas parent folders require a new hostheader (i.e. need to be added in IIS) e.g.

if you have a site such as www.mysite.com and add a child portal (test) the url is www.mysite.com/test , and a seperate portal. If you added a parent portal it would have the a url such as test.mysite.com (or www.anyotherdomain.com)
