Is it possible to implement the organizational structure of a company (consisting of persons, who have one ore more job descriptions, belowing to one or more departments which have department manager and can have child- or parent-departments etc.) in DNN? Is it possible to get an automatically generated organizational chart?

With the "core" DNN modules you'd have to manually create some sort of report/chart.  The REPORT module might be of help but your time/money is probably better spent on a ready-made solution like InfoMap ($40):

Here is a sample orgchart as well as a brief tutorial on creating an org chart using InfoMap:

Hi mamlin, thank you for your answer and the advise. Unfortunately the module does not fit our needs. As I can see so far, it simply provides a GUI to upload an image (which you have to create your own) and create a basic HTML image map on it. Things you can do your own if you have some basic HTML knowledge. The module is neither plotting the chart automatically based on some DB date (as mentioned before instead of plotting you have to create the image your own) nor is it providing a GUI to translate an organizational structure into a database structure (meaning that HR officers can delete and create departments/people/jobs etc., change the organizational structure etc., which is all saved in a DB).

Anyways, thank you for the help. Maybe you or someone else know some other module which realizes the above mentioned.

Hhhmmm....barring a ready-made module that matched your needs, I'd lean towards using an existing (free) module to pass org data to the client page and leveraging an existing (free) library for client-side rendering.  You could do it all server-side but that would likely require writing your own module.

Example:  If you wrote a query (or stored procedure) that returned your org chart in node form (such as XML) it would be fairly simple to apply a free javascript-based chart generator such as the one here:  http://www.xcdsql.org/Misc/orgchart/02/orgchart.html

You would use a module such as the REPORT module to grab the org chart data via the SQL query.  The data would be loaded in the client page but hidden from the user (an XML "data island").  The javascript chart generator would be called after the page was completely loaded to insure the REPORT module had completed the query of the data.

One way to insure that javascript does not run until the DNN page is fully loaded is detailed here:

Hope that gives you some ideas for other potential solutions.  Please post back if you determine a viable solution.
