I've tried to install DNN 4.9.1 using two methods (dragging files straight to local machine from net & downloading, installing and using the starter kit) and both installs have been installed as file system projects, and both resulted with the same error message when built in Visual Studio 2008:

"Error 1 It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level.  This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS. c:\inetpub\wwwroot\DotNetNuke\Website\Web.config 27"

I'd be really grateful for any help regarding this issue!

Your problem is that you're trying to run dotnetnuke from a virtual directory, when the root folder of the site also contains an asp.net site. In asp.net web.config files are inherited, so the one in the virtual directory is inheriting the parent site settings. The easiest way around this is to run dotnetnuke in the root, or else to edit the web.config to disable child inheritance -http://www.aspdotnetfaq.com/Faq/how-to-disable-web-config-inheritance-for-child-applications-in-subfolders-in-asp-net.aspx

Hi Cathall,

Just wanted to say thanks very much as a new install into the root did the trick.
PS It was my boss that started the thread!

Cheers

Mark
