Cathal - Yup - you are right. In general I try not to rebuild (for the oracle dp) only because I want it to work out of the box for the users and not alter the bits that the user can download from dotnetnuke.com in any way/shape or form. :)...

Hi Cathel.  The reason I was using the starter kit first is to have it properly run the scripts to update the database (MS SQL 2005).  As I recall, it was a problem getting the source code version to run that process properly.

Thanks for the tip about modifying the .sln file to point to the virtual directory you want, Sanjay.  I tried that, pointing it to the virtual directory that the starter kit uses (which works fine) and I still have the exact same error.

One benefit from having done so (and experiencing the same problem) is it appears to rule out the possibility permissions in the virtual directory I created for the source code version ("DotNetNuke_Maintenance") are not the source of the 404 error.

Thanks for the tip about copying the machine key section of the web.config, Sanjay.  I copied that over from the starter kit install web.config (and it was different) to the web.config for the source version, but no change at all in the error message I am recieving.

I even added a "localhost/DotNetNuke_Maintenance" port alias to the starter kit version, prior to copying the database for use with the source version, so it would be in there.  It's strange.  Whether I run using F5 or just browse to http://localhost/DotNetNuke_Maintenance/Default.aspx with IE, the error is the same.

I've tried putting breakpoints on the page_load and other points, and running in debug, but the error seems to occur before any code is run (unless you can think of a better location to put the break points on).

I am using IIS 6.

I just tried your scenario but using Source version in both cases and I was able to get the site up and running without any problems. Can you try either the route of using just the source version (start from scratch - unzip source version, create virtual directory, rename release.config, point to blank db and navigate to site)....
Or the other option could be, could you send over an email with exact steps and screenshots - maybe I'll see something in that which I'm not seeing via your post - email should be visible via my profile.

Thanks

Sanjay
