I have the same thing in 4.0.2.  Except when I hit the delete button again, I got another CRITICAL ERROR  and all the posts were blown away, althought the stats were still there.  Fortunatel;y, I was still in test mode.
I since disabled e-mail notifications, but I still get that object 'to" error if I try to delete a message.  I haven't tried to hit the "delete" button again - my site is live now. 

After sniffing around the manuals and forums,  I'm guessing it has to do with SMTP transfer set up... (in site setup under host)  but I'm with Godaddy and so far haven't located any reliable info about what SMTP server to set in the configuration, or even if I have the capability to do so.
