Hi all,

Im brand new to DNN and a bit overwelmed with all the new information I need to get up to speed with.

At present Im trying to develop a DNN 5 site that has a large number of SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services reports embedded in it.

Just wondering if anyone knows of any sites that currently use DNN and Reporting Services, or has built one themselves.
Also on the look out for a HOST that I can put my DNN 5 + Reporting Services 2008 site on. If anyone can suggest one Id appreciate it.

Thanks,
steve257

Hi Steve,

We have fully integrated SSRS and DotNetNuke; they are able to play very nicely together.  Our integration includes custom module functionality and allows users to select and view reports from within a website, along with seamless handoff from the DotNetNuke website into the SSRS advanced reporting web functionality.  The biggest challenge related to cross-coordinating authentication between the two environments.  This is generally straightfoward, but not well-documented on the SSRS side.  I would classify it as a moderately challenging configuration task.  It's possible, however, to achieve close-to-perfect integration.

The core Reports module is also able to interface with SSRS; you'll definately want to explore this avenue to see if it meets your needs.

I am unfortunately unable to recommend a host, as we use a dedicated private network.  Others will be able to chime in on this topic.

Hope this gets you started!

Brandon

Hi Brandon,

Thanks for the quick reply.

Thanks to google Ive found the following DNN/SSRS related modules:

http://modulemasters.com/Products/SQLReportingServices/tabid/216/Default.aspx

http://opensource.indyneinc.com/home/Products/ReportXP/tabid/54/Default.aspx

http://www.zeppelinsoft.com/Projects/RSReports/tabid/64/Default.aspx

which are suppose to allow SSRS to be embedded/integrated into a DNN website and some customisation of how the reports appear. It seems, however that only the last two integrate security between Reporting Services Server and DotNetNuke.

In your opinion is this shared security important? … as my users will only be able to access the SSRS reports via DNN. The SSRS portal will not be accessible by anyone and will only be used to house reports used on th DNN site.

Have you heard of … or used any of the above modules?

Could you also comment a bit more about your dedicated private network, as ultimately my site will be using server(s) to publish real-time data/reports to hundreds of users. I presume this will not be possible via an asp.net host.

Thanks,

steve257

Hi Steve,

I had totally intended to reference the third-party modules that certainly exist to fill this niche; though I do not have any direct experience with them, they may very well provide exactly what you're looking for.  There are some excellent products out there.

It was critical that we coordinate authentication between DNN and SSRS because (i) we did not want to require users to double-authenticate, and (ii) our custom reports are partitioned by user, portal, and role membership.  Without authentication integration, reports must be executed under the same SSRS user (or per-user SSRS authentication must somehow be maintained).  You may be able to utilize AD to mitigate some of these issues, but this is not something that I have direct experience with.  If your reports do not require this sort of context (many reports do not), then you should be fine running everyone in the same context.

I suggest trying out the core reporting module to determine what sort of functionality you'll ultimately need (I believe it uses the same authentication for all reports, on a per-module basis).  Then you can step up to third-party modules and/or custom development as you better understand your particular details.

We have a dedicated SSRS server separate from our MSSQL instance; your exact hardware needs will depend many factors.  Many hosts will allow you to step-up from shared services to dedicated or co-location.  A shared server might be able to generate hundreds of very simple reports; extremely complex reports might require dedicated hardware.  You're likely to be the only one who can determine where on this spectrum you fall.

Hello Steve,

We are using module masters along with SQL 2008 and reporting Services.   We are very pleased.  At one point we had an issue with the module and they responded quickly and fixed it almost immediately.

We haven't upgraded since 4.8, but it doesn't look like there will be much problem going to DNN 5.

As far as hosting, we have been using a dedicated server because I couldn't find anything else that would allow full control reporting services.   Perhaps some of the new cloud computing options will work.  We are open to switching if anyone has a good hosting suggestion.

Regards,

Matt
