I was just wondering if anyone can shed some light on if the PermanentRedirect column will be in DNN 5.0.1 when it comes out?

Also, is there any guidance on how to actually use the 'Permanent Redirect' checkbox?  Obviously you tick the box to get a 301 redirect, but from where to where?

yes, any bugfixes and enhancements in 4.9.2 will be in 5.0.1 (you can always check the roadmap @ http://support.dotnetnuke.com/project/RoadMap.aspx?PROJID=2 to see what's in a release - note: if something is added in an earlier version it's automatically in the later version - gemini doesn't support multiple "fixed-in version" settings, but all future releases are cumulative)

As for how it works, you use the linkurl setting to determine the page e.g. if i had a page called http://localhost/dnn492_ce/Home/tabid/37/Default.aspx but wanted it to actually be mapped to a new page I would add the new page (e.g. http://localhost/dnn492_ce/NewHome/tabid/99/Default.aspx) , and then select that as the page via the linkurl dropdown i.e it's a redirect from this page to the new one. Now, the next time a spider such as google indexes the site, it will detect the premanent redirect (301) to tab 99, and remove tab 37 from it's index. I could choose at a later date to then drop the tab 37 page altogether as it's no longer indexed by search engines.

Thanks Cathal I've got it now.

Just a side note : once you've set up a redirect the only way to go back in and change it is to navigate to the page settings via the admin->pages page.

That's pretty sweet.  I'm actualyl very curious how that is going to affect SEO.

Tony

The only SEO effect it will have is allowing DNN users to 'send' pagerank from a previous page to a new one.  If you're not changing any pages on your site, then it will have no effect whatsoever.

The correct usage for the Permanent Redirect option will be if you (as Cathal says) have a page you no longer want to use, and you want to tell visitors and search engine bots that page has a new location.   You could also use it to try out different page urls, but to do this you would need to move all the page content to a new location.  You can't redirect a page back to itself, even if you change the page name, because you'll end up in a 301 redirect loop.

I've got an old blog post on this topic which is pretty relevant :  understanding 301 redirects
