Hello all,

im trying to install a DNN install package for about 4 hours without any success, numeral guides were a big fail and got me face first into the same error message.

i cant install on localhost becuase i will get redirected to underconstruction.htm
i cant install in any mode (custom, auto, typical) becuse DNN does not connect,

the error it rubs in my face is the folowing
Connection Error(s):
Index #: 0
Source: .Net SqlClient Data Provider
Class: 20
Number: -1
Message: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)

i HAVE this setting enabled and a user (which doesnt make sense since it wants to use windows auth.) as dbowner.
i have tried -Run as db owner- on and off, nothing either.

please help im going mental here.

As well as enabling remote connections at the server level, SQL Server supports the concept of instances, where you can install multiple copies of it onto the same machine but with different names e.g. install two copies with the instance name "dev" and "test" on a machine called "mymachine" and you end up with instances known as "mymachine\dev" and "mymachine\test". If your DotNetNuke site wants to connect to an non-default instance  (i.e. one not called "mymachine"), then you must enable the SQL Browsing service as well to ensure that requests can be routed by the browsing service to the correct instance.

Open the "SQL Server Surface Area Configuration" as described above, and expand out "SQL Service browser" and set it to "Automatic" and click "Start"

you can't use userinstances on a cluster server, as they're localised to the machine. You have to use "proper" sql connection strings, and a full copy of sql server, not sql express
