I am able to configure the ActiveDirectory Provider and login to DotNetNuke using my ActiveDirectory credentials.  However, if I then visit another page that uses NTLM authentication, that is on a different machine from my DotNetNuke server, I still get challenged for my credentials on that other server.  Both servers are on the same domain.  My question is: does the ActiveDirectory provider send the browser a challenge response like NTLM?  Or does it simply authenticate to ActiveDirectory behind the scenes, and therefore, my browser would have no way of knowing that I effectively had logged onto a domain?  Thanks.

It does send a challenge response like NTLM but once you leave the DotNetNuke site your browser is going to treat the other server like a completely new site. Even if you went to another website that's on the same server as your DNN install that required authentication it would ask you for your credentials. As far as I know this is completely normal and part of the IIS security.
