If I develop a module do I have to develop it differently for it to be an extension

No, its litterally just phasing out the term 'Module' and replacing with it 'Extension'. They install the exact same way, and I believe most DNN4 modules should install without too much fuss in DNN5.

Oliver, this is not quite the full picture. "Extensions" is a new expression used for any pluggable addon for DotNetNuke:

  • Modules
  • Authentication Providers
  • Other Providers
  • Skin Objects
  • Skins
  • Containers
  • Language Packs
  • Dashboard Controls
  • custom extensions (e.g. for Reports Module)

all these extensions are now handled by a single installer (Reports module still needs to be updated to handle it appropriately), with optionally additional settings pages.
