I installed ActiveDirectory Provider 1.0.4.  But I think I might be confused about the ActiveDirectory Provider's use case.  When I visit my portal's website: say DNNINSATANCE, I am redirected to WindowsSignin.aspx which requires non-anonymous permissions.  If I attempt to sign in to the dialog that pops up, I invariably get into this neverending sequence of username password requests.  So basically, I have no idea what data store it is authenticating against.  I should note that I set the permissions to use Digest windows authentication and kept the web.config using forms Authentication.

But even so, as long as I visit the page once and cancel the login request, I can reload DNNINSTANCE/Login.aspx and have the opportunity to login with my ActiveDirectory credentials using the WindowsLogin button.  This works great, but then I am puzzled about the requirement that WindowsSignin.aspx has regarding non-anonymous permissions, because that's what brought the Windows Login dialog challenge up in the first place.

Is there any way to avoid having that initial Windows Login dialog appear and just redirect the user to Login.aspx?  Thanks.

Patrick I suggest you download the documentation for the provider as it might answer some of your questions.

The idea behind WindowsSignin.aspx is so that your internal users can get automatically logged in. The pop-up you are seeing is being generated by IIS and the credentials to be entered are Domain\Username or if you put the site into your Intranet/Trusted Sites list under Internet Options it won't show up anymore.

If you want to bypass automatic login just comment the <add name="Authentication".../> line in the <httpModules> section of your web.config.
