Can DNN dll's be installed in the GAC so that different DNN Instances use the same assemblies instead of having multiple copies of the same assemblies in memory? I am guessing the assemblies need to be strong named.

yes, you can add any of them to the GAC, a number of hosting providers do this to make upgrades easier and reduce the working set (all assemblies have to be strongly named to be added to the GAC). Note, you'll need to add the allowpartiallytrustedcallers attribute (APTCA) if your site is running under medium trust - don't forget that this means that the medium trust code can potentially execute code in full trust (all dll's in the gac are inheritently fulltrust). http://blogs.msdn.com/shawnfa/archive/2005/02/04/367390.aspx covers this in some detail.

A website running in full trust in a shared hssting environment is a  bad idea.  A website developer can read/modify other site's files. I am no security expert so I don't know if there's a solution to this. Maybe ACL's come into play to control the access even in full trust.

However DNN running in full trust would be secured if modules and skins are not allowed to be installed for the portals. I am still wondering if installing assemblies in the GAC is a good idea because if the host upgrades DNN to a newer version, all portals would upgrade by default. That might break functionality for some sites where suddenly some modules are not compatible with the new DNN version. For example in the case of 4.x to 5.x.
