As we have to setup our site in two languages, we are looking for a multi-language solution for DNN which can realize the following requirements:

  • For each new content created, there is the possibility to add another version of that content in another language.
  • Same for page titles, breadcrumbs, menu, etc.
  • When language is switched, all contents etc. are displayed in that language
  • If a translated version is not available, either the available version is displayed (so mixed language content in that case then) or the content simply is not displayed

Do you know any good (and maybe free) solution for that?

 Jens,

as long as content localization is not included within the core Framework (announced for later this year), you will need multiple solutions for

 a) page localization, including menu, breadcrumb, links

 b) module content

For page localization, there are free EALO (ealo.codeplex.com), free DSLocalizator (@ dnn.tiendaboliviana.com) and inexpensive PageLocalization from ww.apollo-software.nl, for ML content, there are several modules from same developers as well as from www.portalfabrik.net and others, depending on your needs.

I tried EALO now which looked like a nice solution what they described on their website and codeplex. Unfortunately it does not work:

  • Tabs: Where can I specify Tab names etc. in different languages? Cannot find it in the page settings and the module itself (when adding it to a page) is just a dummy..
  • Breadcrumb: Instead of showing a localized breadrumb, no breadrcumb is shown anymore (of course, as I wasnt able to localize any page titles as said before).
  • Text/HTML: I add the EALO Text/HTML module to a page and can enter both title and content in all installed languages. Back on the page, the module displays only the title (localization works) but not the body at all (in none of both languages).

The simplest / most user friendly FREE approach to implement ML portals is definately our localization extensions (see links below).

Our approach is free, has no learning curve and requires no additional modules (contrary to proposed approaches in this thread), has full support for Search Engine friendly URLs, and many other benefits.

The only limitation in your case is that you will have to define content for all languages (no fallback to content in another language if content in the current language is not present).

I will invite you to check it out:

Thanks for the recommendation. I have two questions regarding your solution:

  • Does the DNN language switch (the [LANGUAGE] SkinObject) work with your solution, so people can switch to another language and then get displayed the corresponding contents and tabs?
  • Does Solpartmenu and Housemenu work with your solution, so both menu bars do not show the dummy language tabs?
