I'm having the same problem but I am not utilizing a VPN between the DNN web server and the AD provider.  I can't honestly say I don't know if my site is having a timeout issue or not but I have a user that is a member of an AD group but they keep getting removed from it automatically in the DNN role that matches that same name. 

Does anyone have any ideas?

I'm kind of a novice so if it helps, I can provide the AD authentication version number I have installed if someone gave me a quick how-to.

I'd have to look at the synch code again to verify (I've changed that section so many times in the last 3 years trying to get it more streamlined) but I don't think so. Back when I took over the project the code removed the user from all roles and then added them back in. Now it is part of a loop that compares roles. So...if it times out it should just exit the procedure where it was.

Ryan, right click on the .dll in the bin\Providers directory on your server and look at the properites. Let me know what the version # is.

I am having the exact same problem.  I think it was working under 1.0.3 and dnn 4.8.4.  I have upgraded to 1.0.5 and dnn 4.9.3.  When the user auto-logins all of the roles are removed from the users.  This is a big problem.  I will up grade to DNN 5.0.1 if you think it will help the problem.  the AD dll is 1.0.5.1443.  Any Ideas?

The DNN 5 version is the exact same as the DNN 4 version. The only difference is the location in the database where the settings are stored. There was a change from 1.00.03 version to the 1.00.04 version because the nested group search was Server 2003 specific and wouldn't work on W2K servers but I'd have to compare  the versions to see exactly what was changed. I also vaguely remember that with the changes it stopped pulling from Distribution groups and only pulls from Security groups but I don't remember if it was at the same time or on another version.
