Well, I went back to using the DNN install wizard as per,

http://www.adefwebserver.com/DotNetNukeHELP/DNN4_DevelopmentEnvironment/DNNDevelopmentWindowsVista.htm

and I have it working on Windows Server 2008/SQL2008. The only thing that I can think of that I did differently is that after I created the database and created a New User..., I created a new user within the database using New Login... ans made the user dbowner. I usually make the user a dbowner using the User Mapping when creating the New User...? 

Anyway, thank you for the support.
