I'm running Vista business and SQLExpress 2005.  I've got DNN 4.9.2 running locally as http://localhost/dotnetnuke4/ and all is good.  However, I'm having no luck installing DNN 5.00.01 as http://localhost/dotnetnuke5/

The installation of DNN5 appears to complete successfully but when I try to visit the home page I get booted to http://localhost/dotnetnuke5/install/.  Rather than use Database.mdf, I create a database (DotNetNuke2) on SQLExpress 2005 and attach using a SQL user account which I give dbowner rights to.  I've tried all manner of variations on the installation (don't install any extra modules, install all modules, etc.) and the result is always the same.  Invariably the installation completes without error but the site is broken.

I think I've now re-installed DNN5 about 6 or 7 times but nothing I do has any effect.  Any suggestions by anyone?  Is there some file I can look at that might shed some light on what is happening?  DNN4 installed so easily, I thought this would be a piece of cake.

Is there a problem running both DNN4 and DNN5 on the same web server instance (localhost)?  I doubt it but I'm really grasping for straws now.

Any and all help or suggestions greatly appreciated.

PS To install DNN4 and DNN5, I followed the instructions given in:

Oops.  The subject for my posting should have been:

Problem installing DNN 5.00.01 on Vista Business

I dropped a couple of zeros in the version number.

Steve,

It sounds like you might have an issue with the PortalAlias for the installation, thus causing the redirect.

Inside the database for the DNN 5 installation, ensure that the HttpAlias value in the PortalAlias table reads as

localhost/dotnetnuke5

If there is a trailing / or a /install at the end, update the record to remove it.

You should have no problems running multiple versions of DNN on the same system.  (I have 4.6.0, 4.7.0, 4.8.4, 4.9.2, and 5.0.1 running on the same box at home)

Your solution worked perfectly!  There was indeed a trailing /install on the value of HttpAlias.  Is there something that I did wrong in the process of installing DNN5?

Thanks so much for your help.

Let me first refer you to Mitchel Sellers' excellent installation instructions at mitchelsellers.com.  Look in the blog.

That said, create the database in SQL Express.  You said that you "attached" the file.  This could be part of the problem.

Just create the database, user and password, and make sure that the use has dbowner privileges.  Then unzip the install package and create the website.  Finally, browse to the website.  The installation Wizard should start up and guide you through the process.  Make sure that you test the file permissions and the database connection at the start.  That's pretty much all that you should need to do.
