Ok, this issue has bothered me for a while but I have not yet seen any questions on it.  Nearly every day I run across at least one thread that shows more "replies" on the forum thread list page than I see when I click on the thread.  That is, if a thread shows "3 replies" I'll click on it but only see two replies.  Or the thread list will show "1 reply" but I won't see any replies when I view the thread.  This does not happen with most threads but when it does happen it happens consistently with a particular thread.

This is more than just an annoyance -- I can't tell if someone's question has already been already answered when I can't see the most recent replies.  If I wait long enough (from minutes to hours) I'm eventually be able to see the "missing" replies.

At first I suspected this to be a caching issue on my end of things but I've been able to rule that out for a couple of reasons:

  • This sometimes happens for brand new threads I've never viewed before (i.e., threads I have not had an opportunity to cache).

  • This happens with the same problem threads even if I switch to a third party proxy server to view a thread that I am having trouble viewing locally.

  • This happens from a variety of systems and locations (various corporate networks, my home network, remote proxies, etc).

Is this perhaps a caching issue with the DNN host servers?  The DNN web farm?  Forum module? (I suspect caching on the host servers/network.)

I'd like to nail down the cause so I can try to avoid the same unwanted behavior on sites I set up.  So far I have not witnessed this forum quirk on any other sites.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Thanks-
-mamlin

This is a known bug that has existed since the release of this version of the core forum.

The post counts include posts that have not yet gone through moderation.  Therefore, if it says 3 posts and you only see 1, there are two pending approvals in the moderation queue.

Ahhhh....that's so simple I now feel bad for not having considered it as the probable cause.

Thanks, Mitch, for the clarification!  I'm still enjoying the book, BTW....

I apologize, but Mitch is wrong. There is simply a counting issue in the module, maybe caused if someone enters edit mode without submitting a post - I haven't been able to figure it out. However, all posts are displayed (except those in the moderation queue, which can be identified if the last contributing user shown in forum view is different from author of the last post in thread view.

Actually, Mitch is correct in that the count is off for replies because it was adding to the total for the thread before it was approved (I verified and fixed this issue). Sebastian, you are correct that it isn't a lost post though. Just an FYI, it was possible in the 4.4.3 version to lose a post if you deleted its parent (this was another bug I verified and fixed). As for an official fix, the module is back in the release tracker and I expect to see it installed here soon then it will be available to the public shortly after that.
