I suggest to analyse the traffic using fiddler to understand, why it is redirected.

did you modify the sub portal foder or files inside?

I had a look with fiddler,

It shows a http header number of 301, 302 then it jumps to the home page.

I checked all the folders for the child portals they are all there,

anybody know if there is a database table that maybe holds the urls, all the files are there.

portal addresses are stored in portalAlias table.

you also need a folder per child portal in the install root, named the same as your child portal folder and containing a (specific) default.aspx
